Blue Mountains closures right now

Rockfalls, landslides and repair work have closed a long list of tracks in the park. Most of the famous lookouts are still open, so a day trip works fine if you know which walks to leave off the plan.

NSW National Parks keeps a running list of closed areas for Blue Mountains National Park. In mid October 2026 it runs to more than a dozen entries for the park alone. Some have an end date. Many say nothing about reopening.

This post goes through the closures that matter for a day trip from Sydney: the Three Sisters area, Wentworth Falls, Blackheath and the roads. Everything here comes from the NPWS alerts page as it stood on 15 October 2026. It changes often, so check it again the week you go.

The quick answer

Echo Point, the Three Sisters walk and Scenic World are open. Closed: Honeymoon Bridge to the first Sister, the Govetts Leap descent, part of the National Pass and the lower Valley of the Waters, Lincolns Rock, and the Prince Henry Cliff Walk between Carrington Park and Honeymoon Lookout from 13 to 27 October. Tours route around these, so the closures change the walks more than the lookouts.

What is closed in the Blue Mountains right now?

Mostly the steep tracks below the cliffs, where rockfalls and landslides have hit. The cliff-top lookouts are largely unaffected.

Here is the list for the areas a day visitor is likely to reach. The wording follows NPWS. Where NPWS gives no end date, the closure stays until the alerts page says otherwise.

Can you still visit the Three Sisters and Echo Point?

Yes. Echo Point and the Three Sisters walk are open. What you cannot do is cross Honeymoon Bridge to the first Sister.

The Three Sisters walk is 0.8 km return and Grade 1, with a gently sloping path to Oreades lookout and steps on to Lady Game lookout. Its NPWS page carries a fire-ban notice in October 2026 and no closure. The Giant Stairway, with its 998 steps, is not on the closures list either. Honeymoon Bridge is, so any blog or old brochure that promises you can touch the first Sister is out of date. You can still see the bridge from Echo Point.

The second closure here is short. From 13 to 27 October 2026 the Prince Henry Cliff Walk is shut between Carrington Park and Honeymoon Lookout for repairs, with a detour along Cliff Drive. It matters if you planned to walk the cliff edge between Katoomba and Leura on those dates. Coach tours that stop at Echo Point and Scenic World, like the classic full-day trip, do not depend on it.

In Leura, the Lower Fern Bower track is closed until 30 October, which cuts the link from Leura Cascades down to Leura Forest.

Want Echo Point, three Scenic World rides and a ferry home without planning around the tracks? The classic day keeps to open lookouts.

Which Wentworth Falls walks are closed?

The long tracks below the falls: part of the National Pass, Wentworth Pass and Slack Stairs, and the Valley of the Waters below Sylvia Falls. Lincolns Rock is closed too.

Wentworth Falls is where the closures bite hardest. NPWS lists the National Pass as closed west of the middle crossing after a major landslide. Wentworth Pass and Slack Stairs are closed for boardwalk repairs, and the Valley of the Waters is closed below Sylvia Falls for rockfall. Together they cut off the classic loops under the cliffs, and the routes to Roberts Pass, Hippocrene Falls and Vera Falls.

The short Wentworth Falls track is different: 1.4 km return past Jamison and Wentworth lookouts and down about 200 steps to Fletchers lookout. Its NPWS page says it is "affected by closures", so read the alerts before you go.

Lincolns Rock, the Wentworth Falls lookout that went viral on social media, was closed by Blue Mountains City Council in January 2026 over safety and environmental concerns. The NPWS list still shows it closed.

Three tours on this site walk at Wentworth Falls: the waterfall walk day, the luxury Wentworth Falls day and the wild kangaroos and sunset tour. Their guides pick the route on the day, and the waterfall walk listing says its steep descent is optional anyway. If reaching a particular spot matters to you, ask the operator which tracks they are using before you book.

Wentworth Falls drops about 100 m by the NPWS count. The tracks at its base are where most closures sit.

What is closed at Blackheath and Govetts Leap?

The walk down from Govetts Leap and parts of Rodriguez Pass. The lookout itself is open.

NPWS lists the Govetts Leap descent and parts of Rodriguez Pass as closed after rockfalls and landslides, with no end date. Valley access from Blackheath is via the Horse Track. Govetts Leap lookout is not on the list: you still get the view over the Grose Valley and Bridal Veil Falls, which NPWS says drops 180 m.

Evans Lookout is not on the list either, and NPWS points to it for sunset. The Grand Canyon track, a 6.3 km loop that returns via Evans Lookout, is not on the closures list. It is a half-day walk, too long for most coach days.

The secluded lookouts tour stops at Govetts Leap and Evans Lookout, and its listing mentions a guided bushwalk to Bridal Veil Falls or Leura Falls. With the descent closed, any walk there has to use open tracks, so ask the operator which one they run on your date.

Are any Blue Mountains roads closed?

Yes. The Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass, west of Mount Victoria, is closed. Glenraphael Drive and Mt Hay Road are closed to cars.

The big one is Victoria Pass, on the Great Western Highway between Mount Victoria and Little Hartley. NPWS advises a detour via Darling Causeway, Bell and Lithgow, and says to allow about 45 extra minutes from Mount Victoria. In June 2026 the NSW Roads Minister said the road would stay closed until mid 2027. It does not touch the drive from Sydney to Katoomba, Leura or Blackheath. It does slow trips further west, to Hartley and Lithgow. Jenolan Caves is closed anyway, as our Jenolan post explains.

Closer to Katoomba, Glenraphael Drive on Narrow Neck is closed to vehicles after road subsidence, so you cannot drive to the Golden Stairs trackhead. Mt Hay Road is closed to cars and walkers until 17 December 2026. Check Live Traffic NSW if you are driving.

How do tours handle closures, and how do you check before you go?

Guides swap a closed track for an open lookout. Check the NPWS alerts page close to your date, and use the free cancellation if your plans depend on one walk.

Most closures sit on the walks below the cliffs, and most day tours spend their time on top of them. Echo Point, Cahill's Lookout, Leura, Govetts Leap lookout and Scenic World are not on the closures list in October 2026. A coach day like the classic full-day trip or the Scenic World, wildlife and cruise day barely notices the list.

Walking days feel it more. If a specific track is the reason you are booking, ask the operator before you pay. Every tour on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before.

Doing it yourself? The NPWS alerts page is the source to trust. The Blue Mountains Heritage Centre at Blackheath answers on 02 4787 8877, 9 am to 4 pm daily. For a one-day plan built around open tracks, see our Blue Mountains day trip guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Honeymoon Bridge at the Three Sisters open?

No. NSW National Parks lists Honeymoon Bridge, the footbridge to the first Sister, as closed for rockfall hazard, with no end date. You can still see it from Echo Point.

Is the Three Sisters walk open in October 2026?

Yes. The 0.8 km Three Sisters walk from Echo Point shows no closure on its NSW National Parks page, and the Giant Stairway is not on the closures list.

Can I walk down from Govetts Leap?

Not at the moment. The Govetts Leap descent and parts of Rodriguez Pass are closed after rockfalls and landslides. The lookout is open, and NPWS points walkers to the Horse Track for valley access.

Do Blue Mountains day tours still run with the closures?

Yes. Most tours spend their time at cliff-top lookouts that are open, and guides swap closed tracks for open ones. Ask the operator if one particular walk matters to you.
