The Blue Mountains in one day

One day is enough for Echo Point, a cliff walk and Scenic World, as long as you start early. Here is how to spend it, with a tour or on your own.

Katoomba is about 102 km from the Sydney CBD by road, and about two hours by train. That leaves you six or seven useful hours in the mountains on a day trip. It is enough for the classic sights if you choose well, and not enough to see everything.

This guide gives a one-day plan, the walks that fit into it, the things that cost nothing, and what is closed right now.

The quick answer

Yes, you can do the Blue Mountains in one day. Take an early train to Katoomba or a tour from central Sydney, spend the morning at Echo Point and the Three Sisters, walk the cliffs or ride Scenic World around midday, and finish in Leura or at Wentworth Falls. Allow about ten hours door to door. Two days let you add Blackheath, a sunset or the Grand Cliff Top Walk.

Wentworth Falls fits into a one-day plan if you skip the wildlife park.

Can you do the Blue Mountains in one day?

Yes. Commercial day tours from Sydney run about ten hours, and the train gets you to Katoomba in about two.

Many visitors do it as a day trip. Destination NSW says day tours take around ten hours and cover the main sights, including the Three Sisters and Scenic World (Destination NSW). Going on your own works too: NSW National Parks notes regular daily trains from Central to Katoomba, Leura and Wentworth Falls, taking around two hours.

What you cannot do in one day is everything. Pick a lane: rides and lookouts around Katoomba, or a proper walk at Wentworth Falls or along the cliffs. Trying to fit Blackheath, Scenic World and a wildlife park into the same day mostly means more time in a vehicle.

A full day in the park with no zoo or ferry: Wentworth Falls, the Three Sisters and a valley lookout.

How much time do you need in the Blue Mountains?

One full day for Echo Point, the Three Sisters walk and Scenic World. Two days to add Blackheath, a sunset or a longer walk.

What is a good one-day Blue Mountains itinerary?

Early train or pickup, Echo Point first, a walk or Scenic World around midday, Leura for a late lunch, then home.

This plan works by train from Central. Tour days follow a similar shape, with a wildlife park or ferry added.

  • Early morning: train from Central to Katoomba, ideally a limited-stop express. Check times in the Trip Planner.
  • Mid-morning: bus or walk down through town to Echo Point. Take the Three Sisters walk to the lookouts, and if your knees are up to it, part of the 998-step Giant Stairway.
  • Late morning to early afternoon: either Scenic World, a few minutes along Cliff Drive, or the cliff path west towards Katoomba Falls.
  • Mid-afternoon: bus or train one stop to Leura for a late lunch and a walk down the Mall.
  • Late afternoon: a train back to Sydney, or one stop east to Wentworth Falls if you still have energy for the falls track.

Arriving after mid-morning on a weekend? Expect a crowd at Echo Point and limited parking, which NSW National Parks warns about.

What are the top things to do in the Blue Mountains in a day?

Echo Point and the Three Sisters, a cliff walk, Scenic World, Wentworth Falls and Leura. Blackheath's lookouts if you have a car or a tour.

  • Echo Point and the Three Sisters: the classic view over the Jamison Valley. Honeymoon Bridge to the first Sister is closed, so the walk now stops at the lookouts.
  • Scenic World: a private attraction with a steep railway, the Skyway, the Cableway and rainforest boardwalks. See our Scenic World guide.
  • Wentworth Falls: NSW National Parks says the fall plunges 100 m to the valley floor. The 187 m figure you will see quoted adds up all three tiers.
  • Leura: a National Trust-classified village centre with cherry trees and cool-climate gardens (Destination NSW).
  • Govetts Leap and Evans Lookout: Blackheath's big views over the Grose Valley, with Bridal Veil Falls dropping 180 m below Govetts Leap (NPWS). Easier by car or with the secluded lookouts tour.

What can you do in Katoomba for free?

Echo Point, the Three Sisters walk, the Giant Stairway, the Prince Henry Cliff Walk and the night-lit Katoomba Falls walk all charge no entry.

The park around Katoomba has no entry fee. NSW National Parks charges a vehicle fee only in the Glenbrook area, at the Sydney end (NPWS). Free things to do in and around town:

  • Echo Point and the Three Sisters walk: 0.8 km return, easy, with an accessible section to Oreades lookout.
  • The Giant Stairway: 998 steps down from Echo Point into the valley. Hard work coming back up.
  • The Prince Henry Cliff Walk: 7 km one way from Katoomba Cascades to Gordon Falls in Leura. Walk any section and turn back.
  • The Katoomba Falls night-lit walk: lights come on at dusk.
  • The Blue Mountains Visitor Information Centre at Echo Point, for maps and walk advice.

The catch is parking. Echo Point is a paid council car park under the Blue Mountains City Council pay-to-park scheme. Come by train and the whole day can cost little more than the fare.

How long is the Katoomba Falls walk?

It depends on the walk: the night-lit walk is 1.3 km, the Round walking track a 1.2 km loop of up to 1 hour 15 minutes, and Furber Steps 2.2 km return.

Three walks start around Katoomba Falls Reserve, on Cliff Drive near Scenic World:

  • Katoomba Falls Reserve night-lit walk: 1.3 km past Katoomba Falls, Katoomba Cascades, Orphan Rock and Witches Leap. Floodlights go off at 10:30 p.m. and path lights at 11 p.m.
  • Round walking track: a 1.2 km loop, 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, Grade 3, with stairs into a rainforest gorge, Vanimans Lookout and Juliets Balcony over Witches Leap.
  • Furber Steps walk: 2.2 km return, 1 to 2 hours, Grade 3, down steep sandstone steps into the Jamison Valley. You can link it to Scenic World and ride up.

Our tip: walk down Furber Steps and ride the Scenic Railway or Cableway back up, if you hold a Scenic World ticket. Check the park alerts first; on 15 October 2026 these three walks listed only the park fire ban.

How should you spend a day on a tour?

Pick the tour by the second half of the day. The morning is road and Echo Point on almost all of them; the afternoon is where they split.

A typical tour leaves central Sydney between about 6:45 and 7:30 a.m. and is back between 5 and 6:30 p.m. The road takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each way. What happens in between depends on the tour:

Remember that a wildlife park and a river ferry each take about an hour, and both happen on the Sydney side.

Seven hours, back in the afternoon: the Three Sisters, Scenic World, Cahill's Lookout and Leura.
