FeelGood! Nature Tours · Blackheath, Wentworth Falls & Megalong Valley

Wild kangaroos and sunset

FeelGood! Nature Tours starts late, walks to quieter lookouts and finishes with wine and cheese at a sunset spot, with owner-guide Craig and no more than ten guests. Pick it if you hate early alarms, want bushwalks away from the crowds and would love a chance, not a promise, of wild kangaroos.

Wild Kangaroos & Sunset, Late Start

About this experience

Most Blue Mountains tours leave Sydney before 8 a.m. This one leaves Circular Quay between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., depending on the season, because the day is built backwards from sunset. Craig, the owner-operator and a former professional photographer, drives a 12-seater van with ten guests at most. The route passes the Fish Market, the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Olympic Park on the way out, then stops at Mountain High Pies for a pie and salad lunch.

In the mountains the plan is quiet lookouts and short bushwalks: Govetts Leap, Wentworth Falls, the Den Fenella track (a steep 1 km return through rainforest to a creek lookout), Landslide Lookout, Coachwood Glen and, depending on pace, Echo Point or a lesser-known Three Sisters viewpoint. Then the Megalong Valley, where the wildlife viewing happens, and sunset at Anvil Rock, above the Grose Valley. Wine, cheese, dips and sweets come out, and on clear nights the astronomical binoculars follow.

Two things to know. The kangaroos are wild, so a sighting is possible but nobody can promise it; the one place the NSW National Parks pages we checked mention kangaroos is Euroka campground near Glenbrook. And the return time moves with the sun: in midsummer you may be back as late as 10 p.m. The listing also sets firm limits, with no children under 12 and no guests over 70, and it is not for people with low fitness, though Craig offers easier options at the key points.

  • Bushwalks to quieter lookouts, including the Den Fenella track

Tips before you book

  • Check your exact pickup time on the booking. It moves between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. through the year.
  • Wear proper walking shoes. Heels and sandals are not allowed, and the listing counts 8,000 to 15,000 steps.
  • Pack a warm layer for the sunset. Katoomba averages about 5 degrees cooler than Sydney, and it drops fast after dusk.
  • Bring a daypack, rain jacket and refillable bottle. There is no luggage storage.
  • On a cruise? Check your ship's departure time first. The return can run late.

Frequently asked questions

Will I see kangaroos on this tour?

Possibly, not certainly. The Megalong Valley stop is planned for wildlife viewing, and the kangaroos there are wild animals in open bushland. If seeing a kangaroo is a must, a tour with Featherdale Wildlife Park is the surer bet.

What time does the kangaroo and sunset tour get back?

It depends on the sunset. The listing says the return varies by season and can be as late as 10 p.m. in midsummer. In winter you are back much earlier.

How fit do I need to be?

Reasonably. The listing mentions uneven ground, 10 to 15 flights of stairs and 8,000 to 15,000 steps, but says it is not a demanding hike and there are easier options at key points. It is not suitable for people with low fitness.

Is there an age limit?

Yes. No children under 12, under-18s must be with an adult, and the listing says it is not suitable for people over 70.
